Lathwood

The Lathwood family name can be traced back in my family tree to 1824 in Preston, Lancashire with the birth of Samuel Lathwood, the son of Samuel.

He married Mary Ann Dunn in her hometown of Bristol. Mary Ann and Samuel had their first two children in Clifton, an affluent area in the district of Bristol, then a third child in Southampton, Hampshire before they settled in Greenwich in the early 1850s, where the rest of their children were born.

Greenwich remained the home of many Lathwoods who were descendents of Mary Ann and Samuel Lathwood, for several generations until at least the 1960s. Other children married and went back up north, closer to their ancestral home, to areas such as Grimsby and Sheffield.

Today Lathwood family descendents can be found all over England, in districts such as Plymouth in Devon; districts of Sheffield and Leeds in Yorkshire; districts of Medway, Maidstone, Dartford and Sevenoaks in Kent; and Lewisham, Greenwich, Bromley, Bexley in south east London. Surname meaning: Recorded as Lathwood and Leathwood, this is an English locational surname. It originates from a place probably called Lee Wood or similar, and meaning the ‘fenced enclosure in a wood.’ This is from the pre 7th century ‘leah wudu’. However no such place has been positively identified as being the ‘home’ of this surname, although there is a district called Lee Woods near the city of Bristol, and a village called Leeswoods in the county of Flintshire, North Wales, although we have no positive proof that the name originates from either. Locational surnames by their very nature are usually ‘from’ names. That is to say names given to people after they left their original villages to live somewhere else. The easiest way to identify these strangers, being to call them by the name or assumed spelling of the name, of their former village. [Copyright belongs to Name Origin Research 1980-2013]
